Residential, mobile, ISP and datacenter labels are useful only when you know what they describe. A network owner, a proxy seller’s product name and a detector’s observed proxy category are different things. Compare those meanings before deciding that two vendors have the same coverage.
A residential address can be an ordinary household connection or a relay exit. A mobile carrier can place many legitimate users behind shared infrastructure. A proxy sold as an “ISP proxy” may use ISP-associated addressing without behaving like a real household browsing session. The returned fields and observed activity matter more than the sales label.

Read network type and relay evidence separately
An ownership database generally describes who operates an address range and how the provider classifies the connection. An observed-proxy dataset records a different fact: that an address was seen participating in a relay network within its observation scope.
| Term | Usually describes | Useful detection question |
|---|---|---|
| Residential | Household/consumer ISP connection | Was this exit observed relaying traffic? |
| Mobile | Carrier-associated network | Is sharing expected, and is there corroborating proxy evidence? |
| ISP proxy | A commercial proxy category | What infrastructure and observed behavior support the label? |
| Datacenter | Hosting or cloud infrastructure | Is the session an expected integration, a relay or abusive automation? |
| Privacy relay | A service masking the client address | Is it recognized privacy infrastructure, and what is the user doing? |
These are evaluation questions, not a universal field taxonomy. Each provider defines its categories differently. Keep that definition with any result copied into a fraud dashboard or rule.
Compare actual field semantics
Castle’s IP intelligence update separates connection type from tunnel information and a dedicated residential_proxy_access signal. Its generic privacy.proxy field can remain false while the residential signal is true. Combining them into one unlabeled “proxy” cell would lose that distinction.
MaxMind’s dedicated Residential Proxy database contains confidence and last-seen information. Its Anonymous Plus documentation defines a narrower is_residential_proxy field that excludes peer-to-peer proxies. A product-family name alone does not establish identical coverage across datasets.
IP2Proxy’s edition matrix places residential coverage in PX10 through PX12. A basic edition with a low advertised price is not an equivalent residential detector. Confirm provider attribution, fraud-score fields, update frequency and the deployment license for the chosen edition.
Distinguish IP lookup from live session detection
Some products infer context from the IP alone. Others collect browser and network observations from the current visit. SEON’s documentation explicitly distinguishes IP reputation checks from its residential/mobile feature using the JavaScript SDK and Fraud API.
ShieldLabs combines device and network intelligence with connection-masking evidence and account-risk context. Its residential/mobile support depends on available context; a separate typed flag is not guaranteed on every identification. That scope is different from querying an observed-exit database for an arbitrary historical IP.
Choose the integration that matches the question. A server log can be enriched after the visit using licensed IP data. It cannot recreate a browser observation that was never collected. Conversely, live session collection does not replace every need for offline IP enrichment or local database deployment.
Include legitimate shared infrastructure
Mobile carrier NAT and shared offices can create many users per public IP. Apple Private Relay masks the source address for supported traffic; Apple describes its Safari privacy design as a two-relay system. It is not evidence that the visitor is operating a commercial residential-proxy farm.
In a pilot, include known ordinary sessions on these networks and inspect the precise reason for any restriction. Ask whether the application can distinguish expected shared egress from repeated account-benefit use. A connection-type label should not silently become a blanket ban.
Turn the taxonomy into a buying checklist
Request representative responses for the exact product and plan. Identify whether the result means network ownership, observed relay participation, live masking evidence or account abuse. Confirm the observation period, missing-value meaning and required collection surface.
Then test those distinctions with permitted cases. Keep a controlled residential exit, a mobile connection, known shared infrastructure and an expected datacenter integration separate. Record the underlying truth of each case independently of the returned category.
The comparison shows evidence layers and starting access. The evaluation guide explains how to compare coverage and cost without treating unlike fields as equivalent.
FAQ
Is a mobile IP a residential proxy?
Not automatically. A carrier-associated IP describes the network. Evidence that it is relaying traffic is a separate observation.
Are ISP proxies always household connections?
Do not assume that from a seller’s category. Check the actual infrastructure, detector field definition and observed behavior.
Can two residential-proxy fields disagree?
Yes. Products can use different observation windows and coverage definitions. Even fields in one product family can have different scope.
