A residential proxy relays someone else’s traffic through an address associated with a household internet connection. Detecting it requires evidence of relay use, observed connection characteristics or a corroborated session. An ISP name alone establishes network ownership, not what the visitor is doing.
For application protection, keep two questions separate: is this connection acting as a proxy, and does this visit present abuse risk? A legitimate privacy-conscious user can use a relay. A fraudulent session can arrive through an address that no proxy dataset has observed yet.
- 1Observe the exit
- 2Corroborate the session
- 3Inspect the account
Start with the observed exit
Determine which address your application actually received through its trusted network path. A CDN or load balancer may be the immediate peer, so reconstruct the client address using the platform’s documented trust configuration. Accepting an arbitrary client-supplied forwarding header can send the wrong address to every downstream lookup.
Next, distinguish an ownership record from a proxy observation. Country, ASN and connection type describe the network. An observed-exit service adds evidence that an address participated in a proxy network during a particular window. Provider attribution, a last-seen timestamp and confidence can make that observation easier to interpret.
| Evidence | Useful conclusion | Question it leaves open |
|---|---|---|
| Residential ISP classification | The address belongs to the classified network | Whether this request is relayed |
| Observed proxy-network participation | The exit has relevant observed relay activity | Whether this visitor is abusive |
| Live device/network mismatch | Parts of the observed session need explanation | Whether the mismatch has a legitimate cause |
| Repeated account-benefit use | The application has a coordination question to investigate | Whether the accounts violate the actual entitlement |
For example, IPinfo’s residential-proxy documentation distinguishes its seven-day API window from its 30-day database window. Those windows affect the interpretation of the result. They do not turn a missing observation into proof of a normal visit.
Corroborate the session
Live collection can add device identity and network characteristics that an IP-only query cannot reconstruct. Supported browser and network measurements can expose inconsistencies between the apparent exit and the observed environment. Automation evidence and repeated activity can further explain the visit.
Treat these as related observations rather than interchangeable verdicts. A timezone difference is not automatically a proxy. A device setting may be unusual for a legitimate reason. The important question is whether the available evidence explains the protected action well enough to support the intended response.
ShieldLabs Network Intelligence combines live device and network context with connection-masking checks. Its proxy/VPN solution supports residential/mobile proxy activity where relevant context is available; a separate typed residential-proxy flag is not guaranteed for every identification. Inspect the returned risk, masking evidence and account findings together.
SEON’s documented residential feature uses the JavaScript SDK with its Fraud API. That is a different integration from an IP reputation lookup. Fingerprint’s product update describes a confidence field for its Residential Proxy Detection signal. Verify the required product and entitlement before comparing outputs.
Connect evidence to the protected action
A signup detector, login detector and payment review have different evidence available. At registration, repeated device/account associations can help explain a sequence of apparently unrelated household exits. At login, account history and authenticated behavior matter. At checkout, payment outcomes and the application’s transaction controls become relevant.
Keep the provider event associated with the correct session and account through the documented integration. An unbound browser label is easy to misinterpret; an old lookup can describe a different connection. Store the observation time, product version or database version and the exact reason used in the decision.
ShieldLabs supplies risk scoring and Trusted, Suspicious and Dangerous verdicts for visitors, users, devices and IP, together with ready-made account-abuse findings. That can help connect proxy context to Multi-accounting or Account takeover investigations. An observed IP feed remains useful complementary evidence.
Evaluate the whole chain
Use known ordinary home sessions, permitted proxy sessions and legitimate shared networks. Include recent and previously unobserved exits, both stable and rotating connections, and collection failures. Record what the provider returned separately from what the application did.
Do not label a case abusive merely because the detector flagged it. Independent case labels and the actual restriction are necessary to understand legitimate-user impact. Use the evaluation guide for denominators, freshness and latency, then compare the ten tools by the evidence layer you need.
FAQ
Can you detect a residential proxy from its ASN?
An ASN helps classify the network owner. It does not establish that the current request is relayed. Observed proxy-network data and live session evidence answer additional questions.
Is an IP feed still useful?
Yes. Directly observed exits, provider attribution and recency can be valuable. Keep the observation window and data freshness visible and combine the result with the protected session where appropriate.
Does proxy use automatically mean fraud?
No. Proxy detection concerns the connection; fraud assessment concerns the action and supporting evidence. Evaluate the actual behavior and use a response appropriate to the flow.
